In the 1940s Osamu TEZUKA saw a poster of Fritz Lang's film METROPOLIS. Without having seen the film, he was inspired to create a comic that finally found its way to the screen. Directed by Rintaro (ASTRO BOY, X) and based on a script by Katsuhiro OTOMO, one of the most spectacular anime films of recent years was created within five years, with an incredible budget of one trillion yen. The elaborate and detailed image design makes the film a unique experience. Metropolis is a retro-modern city that is close to political collapse. Robots and androids have to work for the people. Deep under the city a rebel group is forming. A mad scientist and the powerful Duke Red want to take over world domination with the innocent-looking robot girl Tima. "Metropolis is the new milestone in anime. It has beauty, power, mystery, and above all... heart. Images from this film will stay with you forever. - Jim Cameron
