Shinnosuke is presented with Shizu as a prospective bride, but instead falls in love with her widowed sister Oyu, who is barred from remarrying. Shizu, who cares more for her sister’s wellbeing than her own, urges Shinnosuke to go through with the wedding so that he and Oyu have a way to be close to each other. Kinuyo TANAKA stars as the eponymous Oyu in this love triangle of suppressed emotions from Kenji MIZOGUCHI.
