Letters From Chiran

A Mask Performance by Tomoya KAWAMURA and Francesco PROCOPIO (Director) - Concreto Theatre

In his mask theatre storytelling, Tomoya KAWAMURA tells us about the life of ordinary people during the last world war. Through the eyes of young kamikaze pilots, who were trained in the southern Japanese town of Chiran during World War II – and through the experience of the woman who runs the nearby Shokudo (canteen), this show helps us to see how ideology and militarism are always ready to lightly sacrifice ordinary people's lives. In doing so, KAWAMURA brings to life a past that seems alarmingly relevant around eighty years later.
