Fe/male Gaze in Japanese Film – From Reality to Utopia?

Nippon Culture   º

A Lecture by Vic ATANASOV

Female directors often use the cinema as a place to create alternative realities for women. In this lecture, Vic ATANASOV analyzes contemporary Japanese films, such as Yukiko SODE’s ARISTOCRATS (2020 / NC ’21) and Moët HAYAMI’s KUSHINA, WHAT WILL YOU BE (2018), from the perspective of the Fe/male Gaze. How do women’s perspectives, both in front of and behind the camera, shape feminist utopias? And how do they resist patriarchal realities in Japan and create spaces for self-determined ways of life?
