Shigeki, one of the Ainu people of northern Japan, follows the traditions of his ancestors and teaches his son Motoki about their heritage. But how can old customs be revived after centuries of suppression? Takeshi FUKUNAGA’s documentary provides an insight into a community that is asserting itself with growing confidence despite many challenges.

About Takeshi FUKUNAGA
福永壮志
Takeshi FUKUNAGA was born in Hokkaido Prefecture in 1982 and studied film production and film editing in New York. His first feature film OUT OF MY HAND premiered at the Berlin International Film Festival in 2015. His second feature film AINU MOSIR (2020 / NC ’21) was made with the support of the Cannes Cinéfondation and had its world premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival. His third film MOUNTAIN WOMAN (2022) was shown at Nippon Connection in 2023. In addition to his accolades for his directorial work, he won numerous prizes as an editor, like for THE BIRTH OF SAKÉ (2015 / NC ’16).
