Nuiko is a lonely girl whose best friends are self-made plush toy animals. Looking for a real friend, she meets the mysterious killer Yabachari, who rides through town on a bicycle. But Nuiko’s toy companions aren’t exactly harmless themselves. SCARY FRIEND is an immensely creative low-budget film that presents a bizarre and eerie horror fairy tale.

Takara MINEO, born in Tokyo in 1998, met Naohiro TAKAHASHI in school. During their time at university, they began making short stop-motion films together. SCARY FRIEND (2022 / NC ’23) is their feature-length debut, which won the Runner-Up Award as well as the Audience Award at the 2022 PIA Film Festival.
