Social Pressure, Private Emotion – Families In Hirokazu KOREEDA’s Films

Nippon Culture   º

A Lecture By Claudia Bertolé

Family is something a person cannot choose, but, as Nobuyo in SHOPLIFTERS (2018) says: “If you choose, the emotional bond is stronger.” Since his earliest works, award-winning film director Hirokazu KOREEDA has been focusing his attention on family units. Film scholar and author Claudia Bertolé will give an overview of KOREEDA’s way of representing Japanese families in his films, including institutional issues, social pressures, blood ties and human emotions.
