In the near future, Japan is faced with a desperately overaged population and a fierce social struggle for jobs and housing. Thus, the government introduces a program encouraging everybody over the age of 75 to choose suicide. In her feature film debut, which premiered at the 2022 Cannes Film Festival and was Japan’s entry for Best International Feature Film at the Academy Awards, Chie HAYAKAWA depicts an alarming dystopia.

About Chie HAYAKAWA
早川千絵

Chie HAYAKAWA, born in Tokyo in 1976, studied photography at the School of Visual Arts in New York and has been making films since 2000. After her award-winning short film NIAGARA (2013), she directed an episode of the omnibus film TEN YEARS JAPAN (2018), produced by Hirokazu KOREEDA. Her first feature-length film PLAN 75 (2022 / NC ’23), which was based on this episode, screened at the Cannes Film Festival, among others, and won numerous awards.
