Nippon Retro ²
Rural Onomichi in the 1930s: Two rival groups of elementary schoolers organize a war game to settle their dispute. But just as the Pacific War approaches, so does the children’s war game become more earnest. In his typical combination of cartoonish exaggeration and melancholy, virtuoso director Nobuhiko OBAYASHI dedicates himself to one of his core themes: the corrupting power of war and the loss of innocence inevitably caused by every form of violence.
