Wataru and Kiyoko’s marriage was once arranged by their parents. Now their daughter Setsuko wants to marry a simple office worker from Wataru’s company. The wealthy businessman, wishing only the very best for his daughter, is displeased with the sudden announcement and refuses to give the young couple his blessing. Yasujiro OZU’s first color film humorously relates this generational conflict in meticulously crafted tableaus. Kinuyo TANAKA plays Kiyoko in one of her last larger roles before her short comeback in the 1970s.
