A special kind of road movie: While the protagonists are on the road the whole time, the film is actually only about coming 'home'. Seemingly aimless and infinitely slow, old man Nakamura drives through the desolate landscape of Hokkaido. On the way, he meets Akemi, who was abandoned by her boyfriend in the wasteland, and takes her with him. The journey becomes increasingly spooky until they finally meet Shizuko, who is on the run with a bag full of money and joins them.
