After having shot a long line of cheap, run-of-the-mill yakuza movies for production company Nikkatsu, director Seijun SUZUKI began experimenting with the stylistic means of filmic portrayal. The peak of this work phase was reached in 1966 with TOKYO DRIFTER, a highly stylized gangster film with its extravagant sets, ballet-like action scenes, and pop-art colors. The story revolves around a young yakuza being chased by a rival gang after declining one of their offers.
