An elderly married couple from the province travels to Tokyo to visit their children: the son, who has become a doctor, the daughter running a beauty salon, as well as the wife of another son who went missing in action during the war. Everything is filmed with enormous patience, great care even for the tiniest details, and in Ozu’s distinctive style: mostly fixed shots from below with a steady focus and generally a strong reduction of filmic means, which are yet used to full effect.
