A Lecture By Ichiro KATAOKA

The famous benshi (film narrator) Ichiro KATAOKA has amassed an extraordinary collection of about 3,900 Japanese shellac records from between 1915 and 1950. They contain sounds of film and entertainment, folk songs, news, and more – an acoustic archive of early Japanese pop culture. In his presentation, KATAOKA will offer insights into the collection and the meaning of the records for cultural studies.
