Arnold FANCK アーノルド・ファンク

Die Tochter des Samurai

新しき土

Nippon Cinema   ª

Teruo, son of a samurai family, returns home a changed man after studying in Germany. Director Arnold FANCK explores pre-WWII Japanese politics in this first Westerner-directed Japanese film, prompting current discussions around nationalism and propaganda.

Introduction by Dr. Iris HAUKAMP (45 minutes)
Dr. Iris HAUKAMP, Associate Professor of Japanese Studies at Tokyo University of Foreign Studies, is the author of a book on the origin story of the film. She will outline the circumstances that led to the production of THE DAUGHTER OF THE SAMURAI. The collaboration between the involved parties in Germany and Japan was not easy. A second, edited version of the film was created due to a conflict with Japanese co-director Mansaku ITAMI. The lecture will examine both versions of the film and their impact on Japanese and German audiences.
