My Small Land

Nippon Cinema   ª

17-year-old Sarya is often asked what her native country is. The answer is not easy, as she moved to Japan from Turkey as a refugee with her Kurdish family. She feels at home in Japan, is a good student, and even falls in love with a co-worker from her part-time job. But when Sarya’s family loses its refugee status, her world collapses. Emma KAWAWADA’s coming-of-age film portraits the precarious situation of the Kurdish community in Japan.
