Representations Of Okinawa In Film Between Stereotype And Postcolonial Critique

Nippon Culture   º

A Lecture By Dr. Ina Hein

Until 1872, Okinawa, the former Ryukyu Kingdom, was still considered a “foreign country” by the Japanese. The notion that Okinawa is “different” from the rest of Japan continues to this day. In her lecture, Dr. Ina Hein from the University of Vienna takes a look at clichés around Okinawa that can be found again and again in Japanese cinema and shows how filmmakers from Okinawa try to debunk these clichés.
