A Lecture By Megumi HAYAKAWA
It is often said that Osamu TEZUKA laid the foundation for the special form of Japanese animation known today as anime with his television series ASTRO BOY (1963–1966). Even before TEZUKA, however, another manga artist, Ryuichi YOKOYAMA, was blazing new trails for the stagnant Japanese animation industry. Megumi HAYAKAWA (University of Zurich) traces the lives and work of the two pioneers of Japanese animation from the 1950s onwards.
