Labyrinth Of Cinema
海辺の映画館―キネマの玉手箱
Nippon Cinema ª
The last cinema in the coastal town of Onomichi is about to be shut down for good, screening one final marathon of old war films. Three young viewers become so immersed in the action that they find themselves on the other side of the screen, chasing through the annals of war and film. Nobuhiko OBAYASHI’s final opus is as playfully experimental as many of his previous works, frenetically edited, and bursting at the seams with visual effects. It is a drastic yet never hopeless condemnation of the horrors of war, and above all a monumental eulogy to the power of cinema. For those who want to see more after the film: In our section BEST OF NIPPON CONNECTION, we will present Nobuhiko OBAYASHI’s cult classic HOUSE as well.

SADA won him the FIPRESCI Prize at the Berlin International Film Festival in 1998.
