Family in Contemporary Japanese Cinema

Nippon Culture   º

A Lecture By Chantal Bertalanffy

After the Second World War, Japan became an economic power. The nuclear family – consisting of a working father, a mother providing parental care and two children – became the cornerstone of society. However, the model broke apart in the 1990s due to the recession. Chantal Bertalanffy (University of Edinburgh) explains how the family has been represented in Japanese Cinema since the 1990s.
