Hirobumi WATANABE, 1982 in Tochigi geboren, gründete nach seinem Studium am Japan Institute of the Moving Image gemeinsam mit seinem Bruder, dem Filmmusikkomponisten Yuji WATANABE, die Produktionsfirma Foolish Piggies Films. Seit seinem Debüt AND THE MUD SHIP SAILS AWAY (2013 / NC ’14) sind seine Filme regelmäßig bei Nippon Connection zu sehen, etwa PARTY ’ROUND THE GLOBE (2017 / NC ’18) und LIFE FINDS A WAY (2018 / NC ’19). Sein dritter Spielfilm POOLSIDEMAN (2016 / NC ’17) gewann sowohl den Japanese Cinema Splash Award beim Tokyo International Film Festival als auch den NIPPON VISIONS JURY AWARD.
