In ORNAMENTAL HAIRPIN, Hiroshi SHIMIZU tells a tender love story set against the backdrop of World War II. Wounded soldier Nomura recovers in a bathhouse, where he sustains another injury by stepping on a lost hairpin. The owner of the pin turns out to be Emi (Kinuyo TANAKA), who then travels from Tokyo to apologize. Both begin to develop feelings for each other – despite knowing that the soldier will have to return to the war after his recovery.

His debut film IKINAI (1998) won awards at several festivals. SHIMIZU worked as an assistant director on six films by Takeshi KITANO (Sonatine, Getting Any, Kids Return, Hana-bi, Kikujiro and Brother).
